There are many spiritual advantages to allowing Jesus to transform our suffering and difficulties into crosses – instruments of salvation. It is because His Spirit dwells in our souls through Baptism that He suffers when we suffer" (Mother Angelica). It is because Jesus suffered and we unite our pain to His that suffering changes and transforms us. "If it did, all those in hell would be saved, for they endure great suffering and that pain is eternal. This is key because suffering in itself does not work for the good or automatically make us holy. In reality, all suffering is transformed, changed into a cross as soon as we accept it from the hands of the Savior (Jesus, I trust in you), and cling to His will which transforms it for our spiritual advantage. Jesus does not want our sorrows to be fruitless, but to become a cross - a means of elevating and sanctifying our souls and at the same time, an instrument of salvation for others.

Redemptive suffering is a gift of the Church and a gift to you. So when you find yourself suffering, trust that it is not in vain Jesus suffered first, he suffers with you now, and he is using your suffering to bring about good. By his Cross and Death, Jesus reclaimed suffering from the enemy and made it something life-giving. Just as Jesus’ suffering gave us new life and cleansed us of sin, our own suffering can be offered for the benefit of others. When we unite our suffering to the Passion of Christ, it becomes a powerful prayer. Though we might be tempted to roll our eyes at this, it’s actually what we’re all called to do when we face hardships. We’ve probably all been told to “offer it up” at some point in our lives. Help me to allow my suffering and crosses - great & small - to unite me more deeply to you, help other people and to increase my capacity to love you for all eternity.
